Norway’s Pemco Energy invests in Sustainable Power; will establish European distribution for bio-crude

In Texas, biocrude producer Sustainable Power announced a strategic alliance with Norway’s Pemco Energy, which manufactures and distributes oil and chemical-based products throughout Europe. Sustainable Power and Pemco will jointly establish SSTP Europe to sell biocrude and other SSTP products into Europe. As part of the agreement, Pemco acquires 50 million shares of SSTP for $2 million, and agreed to contribute up to $6 million to the SSTRP Europe venture. Pemco recorded sales of $500 million last year.

Sustainable Power background

Sustainable Power’s bioreactors utilize the Rivera process to produce bio-crude from algae, palm fruit, coconuts, and other industrial or food waste. Sustainable Power is the exclusive licensee of the Rivera process, originally developed by US Sustainable Energy (USSE.PK).

Sustainable Power announced that its 10 percent biojet fuel blend had been successfully tested in conjunction with AmSpec Services and an undisclosed major domestic US airline. Tests concluded that the blend had met and exceeded current jet fuel specifications, providing the company with a viable entry into the 18 billion gallon commercial aviation fuel market. The company announced last month that it received confirmation from AmSpec Services, LLC that its bio-crude samples produced and taken from its Baytown, Texas facility were found to have similar properties to material used for gasoline blend stocks, which are used to create marketable gasoline.

In April, the company signed an initial agreement with with L. Solé, S.A., a leading company in Spain responsible for building over 400 biomass powered facilities throughout Spain, the European Union, Russia and in all of Latin America. In the initial agreement, L. Solé agreed to provide up to $2 billion in financing to fund the expansion of SSTP’s Baytown, TX facility, as well other facilities worldwide utilizing SSTP’s total solution technology. The financing will be in the form of debt, and is therefore non-dilutive to the existing SSTP shareholder base. L. Solé also plans to “ EPC “ (engineer, procure and construct ) a minimum of 400 reactors in Baytown, Texas.

As February eneded, Sustainable Power Corporation (SSTP.PK) sold a 2.44 percent stake to Borneo Oil (KLSE: BORNOIL) for $2.0 million, and has signed a collaboration agreement to install a pilot bioreactor in Malaysia, using the Rivera process to produce biocrude. Under the agreement, Borneo Oil will install and commence production with up to 20 additional biofuel reactors in Indonesia and Malaysia by summer 2009.
The announcement by Sustainable Power and Borneo Oil is the most significant international expansion announced to date in biocrude production. It confirms that Sustainable Power is a step ahead of a large group of competitors in taking biocrude from the development stage to commercial viability.

Sustainable Power’s bioreactors utilize the nanobacteria-based Rivera process to produce bio-crude from algae, palm fruit, coconuts, and other industrial or food waste. Sustainable Power is the exclusive licensee of the Rivera process, originally developed by US Sustainable Energy (USSE.PK).

Borneo Oil is a diversified Malaysia trading company with interests in real estate, resorts, restaurants, food processing, catering services, machinery, phone cards, as well as providing management and technical services to the oil & gas industry as well as other energy related businesses. CEO of the Borneo Oil & Gas and Borneo Energy subsidiaries, Abd. Hamid Bin Ibrahim, has joined the board of Sustainable Power as of February 24th. Ibrahim retired from Petronas in 2003 after 27 years service, during which he served as Managing Director or CEO of numerous Petronas subsidiaries, including Petronas Gas.
In February, Sustainable Power announced a definitive Joint Venture agreement and an additional $100,000 in deposits from Farmers Sustainable Energy International (FSEINT) located in Quincy, Illinois. The entities had previously executed a Memorandum of Understanding announced on December 11, 2007 . SSTP had previously received the initial $200,000 deposit of the $2,000,000 that was required to implement the initial terms of the agreement.

Earlier in February, the Baytown (TX) Sun reported today that President Julio González Gamarra, president of the Central American Parliament (Parlacen), offered to contribute up to $4 billion for the rollout of the “Rivera” process to Latin America. The Rivera process is used at the Baytown Green Energy Facility, a joint venture of US Sustainable Energy and Sustainable Power Corporation, now operating at 2.4 Mgy capacity.
President Gamarra and engineer Fernando Ricardo Luna Waldheim visited the Baytown facility following a demonstration of the “Rivera process” earlier this month in the Dominican Republic. “This technology has a great future,” Waldheim told the Sun. It’s just a great opportunity for us to enter and to substitute the demand and to lower the energy costs in these countries where they don’t have crude oil, but they do have the agriculture,” he added.

In January, Sustainable Power conducted a successful demonstration of its soybean-to-crude oil production capabilities at its Baytown, TX facility. The biocrude producer is also awaiting lab results from a test of biocrude production using 20 pounds of algae as a feedstock.

The company had recently installed a new production line at its Baytown facility, and has been successfully testing up to 1,000 gallons per day of soybean-based bio-crude production.

The company’s “Rivera” process, which is closely held as a trade secret, will produce fuels that will be certified at an on-site facility by Amspec. Amspec Senior VP Jim Ford, who serves on the board of the Americas Committee of the International Federation of Inspection Agencies, has recently joined the board of Sustainable Power, a related company that has licensed the Rivera process.
According to US Sustainable Energy CEO John Rivera, following Amspec’s certification of each batch of biocrude, the company will transfer the certified oil to an onsite, Aspec-controlled storage facility. The certified biocrude will be then be sold to George E. Warren Co., a major wholesale petroleum distributor, which will have the option of distribution via pipeline or barge.

The initial production line has a capacity of 3 million gallons per year, and the company has plans in place to add additional lines, with potential maximum capacity of more than 1 million gallons per day at its 500-acre Baytown plant.

On Friday, the company ran its initial test of 20 pounds of 5% oil-content algae feedstock with 40 percent water content, and resulted in an ignitable oil product.

The algae was supplied by Green Star Products, which is negotiating with US Sustainable Energy to install a series of algae bioreactors at the Baytown facility, should test results be favorable.

Biocrude, as compared to biodiesel or ethanol, can be distributed using existing infrastructure, and when refined into gasoline or diesel fuel has the same performance and engine-wear characteristics as the corresponding fossil fuels it replaces. Derived from a sustainable feedstock that can be produced in large quantities with negigible environmental impact, biocrude (and synthetic crude oils as a category) have been one of the most elusive yet valuable prizes in the quest for a global energy solution.

Hi Genesis, glad to hear from you again,Missed you. I think a number of us are having to take quiet life pills, and resorting to meditation to keep the old over excitement reaction button under control with the news coming out of Baytown. How JR manages is beyond me. Bless his little cotton socks.

We had our annual church cook-out on the grounds here! Two barbeques running at full charcoal, lots of traditional sides, fruit, and dessert....

...water balloon fights and three-legged races with the kids, frisbee, basketball, and volleyball... parking lot fireworks and the annual city display at the fairgrounds (which we have front row seats for from the church lawn)

... and yes, we paused to remember and express our gratitude for our country, the freedoms that we have, and all those who have fought and died (and are still fighting and dying) for our freedoms. This was our 232nd Independence Day! Lord willing, we'll have many more.

This was a week of great news we had, and I'm very grateful to be a small part of what's happening here!

I don't blame people for having a 'healthy' skepticism. I don't blame people at all for having some serious doubts. After all, there are lots of reasons why SSTP could still falter and fail.

But it's too bad that the dedicated naysayers and the nattering nabobs of negativity are completely unable to acknowledge even the slightest bit of positive news, no matter how good or at least potentially promising!

At the Bull, there have been two posts the entire last week... TWO... and both of those were totally dismissive and disrespectful of Pemco and the longs that see real merit in this partnership. Neither does the pending deal with ISole' mean a thing. Most of course, aren't saying a thing because perhaps, just perhaps... even they are beginning to wonder if there's a slight chance JR's gonna pull this off with help from new investors and new companies. If they are, they're not saying or acknowledging a bit of it. Sad really, that people that have been so sour, so negative, for so long, that good news, any good news, is simply too good to be true.

Well, all the more reason I s'spose to finish getting the rest of these contracts signed, sealed, and delivered.

Nothing like signed contracts and real revenue to get everyone on your side...

Biodiesel conversions and mandates background

• Little Rock, AR will convert its diesel vehicles to a B10 blend in fall and winter and a B20 blend in spring and summer.
• Sun Tran announced a plan to acquire 119 B100 biodiesel buses over the next five years. The Arizona transit company currently runs 56 percent of its fleet on biodiesel and the remainder on compressed natural gas.
• Ukrop’s Super Markets, construction company Danchanko and Con Edison announced conversions to biodiesel. Ukrop’s said that it was recycling waste oil from chicken-frying at 11 of its stores to power its fleet of 60 vehicles. Danchanko is microbrewing its own biodiesel from locally collected waste oil. Con Ed said it had introduced B20 to its fleet and expects to reduce conventional diesel consumption by 400,000 gallons.
• In Washington state, the Eastern Washington Gateway Railroad will conduct a three-month test of biodiesel for its 109-mile rail line between Cheney and Coulee City. The line is used for grain harvest transporatation. Soy, canola oil, grease, soy and other undisclosed feedstocks will be tested.
• Case Construction Equipment said that it was approving B20 biodiesel in more than 85 percent of its construction equipment. The company had approved B5 blends in 2006.
• The American Society of Testing and Materials subcommittee on biodiesel standards approved new standards for B6 to B20 blends, which will prompt more vehicle manufacturers to approve B20.
• In Louisiana, the Regional Transit Authority said that it would purchase 39 new vehicles that would use a biodiesel blend. The organization did not issue a timeline on deployment of the buses, nor a blend ration, but RTA said in a statement that its focus in making the change was a desire to voluntarily reduce pollution, and that the RTA did not intend to raise fares.
• John Deere has approved B100 for use in its PowerTech and PowerTech Plus Stage IIIa engines, and earlier designs. The company said that it was approving the use of biodiesel rather than cold pressed rapeseed oil, and that the approval was subject to proper handling and storage of fuels and use of a John Deere B100 additive. Last November, the company announced that its official policy on biodiesel was that B5 blends were preferred, but that B20 was acceptable if used in conjunction with an approved fuel conditioner.
• In Florida, the Central Florida bus system, Lynx, will convert its 290 buses and four support vehicles to B20 biodiesel, which it will blend at its own facility in Orange County.
• In Washington State, Tri-City & Olympia Railroad has established a subsidiary, Green Diesel, to make biodiesel for the railroad. The subsidiary has established a 1 Mgy research plant in Richland that will produce fuels for use on the 127-mile railroad that uses 500 gallons of fuel per week for the 100 cars it runs on the line.
• In Nevada, Q&D Construction will convert its heavy equipment to B20, following the conclusion of a successful pilot test which commenced in 2004.
• The University of Washington is converting its fleet from B5 to B20 effective February 2008. The University indicated that it plans to ultimately convert to B90.
• In Colorado, Blue Sun will supply its Fusion 20 biodiesel to the 45-truck Corporate Express fleet in Colorado and Kansas.
• In Arizona, Dole Fresh Vegetables has converted its harvesting equipment in B20 biodiesel. The company had been testing B20 since August in both farm equipment and its off-road vehicles.
• Safeway Stores announced last week that it is converting its entire nationwide fleet to B20 biodiesel, following a successful conversion of the company’s 79-truck Arizona fleet to B20 last August.
• In North Carolina, Chapel Hill converted 60 percent of its vehicles to alternative fuels with a goal of 100 percent conversion by 2012. The town most recently converted biodiesel trucks and E85-ready police cars.
• Burlington, NC converted to B10 biodiesel for its city vehicles after concluding a successful test of B5 which began in July. Burlington hopes to convert eventually to B20, but cited the need for a slow transition due to the cleaning effect of biodiesel which can clog fuel filters. The city saw fuel cost increases of 20 cents per gallon when the pilot program commenced, but prices have subsequently dropped and now provide a one-cent savings.
• In Oregon, the city of Cottage Grove is converting its city vehicle fleet to biodiesel, while earlier in the month five Pennsylvania school districts announced a switch to B20 biodiesel.
• New York’s Oneonta Public Transit siwtched to B20 for buses on all five of its bus routes.
• Fresh Direct will convert its fleet of 150 delivery trucks to B5 in February 2008.
• Montclair, NJ switched its 70-plus diesel-powered fleet and off-road equipment to B20 biodiesel late last year.
• In New Hampshire, Cranmore Mountain Resort has reported that its fleet of trucks, which operate on B20, have experienced no problems relating to the effect of cold on biodiesel, at temperatures as low as minus 20 Fahrenheit. Cranmore is one of two New Hampshire ski resports that have converted to biodiessel.
• Mount Sunapee Resort, converted its snow grooming and snow removal equipment to B20 biodiesel, and converted its hearing systems to B5.
• In Maryland, state highway officials said that they have converted snowplows to a B5 blend this season, and expect to convert their equipment to B20 in 2008-09.
• Monterey-Salinas Transport will commence making its own biodiesel, and will convert to B20. MST will use mustard seed, grown as a cover crop, as a feedstock, and will test production from a 30-acre plot where two varieties of mustard seed will be tested with barley as a control crop, on lands donated for the study by San Bernabe Vineyards.
