Slack-Jawed And Without Words...

And it's not too often I'm without words (as you all know too well)!

Since some Asian businesses are obviously interested in li'l ole' SSTP, and Palm Oil is known to be HUGE in Asia, I Wikipedia'd Palm Oil and YOU FOLKS WOULD NOT BELIEVE WHAT I FOUND THERE !!!

ARE YOU ALL SITTING DOWN?!? Good... here are some brief excerpts towards the end of the article, but the entire piece is quite an education. Go to Wikipedia's Palm Oil entry when you have a little time to read... in the mean time, JUST TRY and wrap your head around the implications of THIS:

(I bold-faced and underlined what I think are EXTREMELY relevant and exciting information). GOD BLESS WIKIPEDIA !!!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Palm oil, biofuels and bioproducts

Palm oil, like other vegetable oils, can be used to create biodiesel for internal combustion engines. Biodiesel has been promoted as a form of biomass that can be used as a renewable energy source to reduce net emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Therefore, biodiesel is seen as a way to decrease the impact of the greenhouse effect and as a way of diversifying energy supplies to assist national energy security plans. Scientists have found that biodiesel made from palm oil grown on sustainable non-forest land and from established plantations can effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Other scientists and companies are going beyond merely utilizing the oil from oil palm trees, and are proposing to convert the entire biomass harvested from a palm plantation into renewable electricity, cellulosic ethanol, biogas, biohydrogen and bioplastic. Thus, by utilizing both the biomass from the plantation as well as the processing residues from palm oil production (fibers, kernel shells, palm oil mill effluent), bioenergy from palm plantations can have an effect on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

By utilizing all the biomass residues from palm oil processing for renewable energy, fuels and biodegradable products, both the energy balance and the greenhouse gas emissions balance for biodiesel from palm oil is improved. For each tonne of crude palm oil (CPO) produced from fresh fruit bunches, the following residues, which can all be utilized for the manufacture of biofuels, bioenergy and bioproducts, become available: around 6 tonnes of waste palm fronds, 1 ton of palm trunks, 5 tons of empty fruit bunches (EFB), 1 ton of press fiber (from the mesocarp of the fruit), half a ton of palm kernel endocarp, 250kg of palm kernel press cake, and 100 tonnes of palm oil mill effluent (POME). In short, a palm plantation has the potential to yield a very large amount of biomass that can be used for the production of renewable products.[38]

Regional production

Malaysia
In 2004, Malaysia produced 14 million tons of palm oil from more than 38,000 square kilometres of land, making it the largest exporter of palm oil in the world. The majority of its crops goes towards its traditional markets for personal hygiene and food use...

The IEA predicts that biofuels use in Asian countries will remain modest. But as a major producer of palm oil, the Malaysian government is encouraging the production of biofuel feedstock and the building of biodiesel plants that use palm oil. Domestically, Malaysia is preparing to change from diesel to bio-fuels by 2008, including drafting legislation that will make the switch mandatory. From 2007, all diesel sold in Malaysia must contain 5% palm oil. Malaysia is emerging as one of the leading biofuel producers with 91 plants approved and a handful now in operation, all based on palm oil.[9] Most are aimed at supplying regional demand, though exports to Europe are also planned, with China currently the main importer of Malaysian products for biodiesel.[41]
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

S'cuse me now, I gotta' go find my socks...

I was wondering what kind of feedstock those fellows brought over to test in our reactors, you know, the stuff that looked like tribbles and saw dust? The above description of 'palm biomass residue' in the third to the last paragraph sounds a lot like what we saw in the pictures. Do you (we) have ANY idea how MUCH of that stuff they've got?

And OUR reactors and OUR REACTORS ALONE can make good biocrude from that?

Hi Parson, Good trawling sunshine.Just alittle calculation to keep the ole grey cells working.

1 tonne= 250 kilo's = 2200 lbs

I will take the 2004 figures from the article leaving out the 5 tonne of fronds,1 tonne of palm trunks which would need to be shredded etc I think, and also the efluent is another process etc. So leaving those to one side here we go.

Biomass left for each 1 tonne of palm oil produced

empty fruit bunches = 5 tonnes
press fibre = 1 tonne
palm kernal endocarp = 0,5 tonne
palm kernal presscake= 0.25 tonne

total = 6.75 tonnes

Malaysia produced in 2004 14 million tonnes.

Biomass = 6.75 x 14 million = 94.5 million tonnes

that works out to 2200 lbs x 94.5 million = 207,900 million lbs

this is getting rediculous.

the USSE figures for fuel output using soy bean spoilt etc as 5 gallons/bushel and the figure for bushel based as 60lb not 55lb.

so the figure for bushels of biomas from palm oil is

207,900 millions lbs / 60lbs = 3,465 million bushels

3,465,000,000 bushels.

We don't know at this stage what the out put of fuel is from palm biomass
is as yet.If and a big if, it is the figures are similar to our feedstock that we know about.NO WONDER THERE IS INTEREST IN USSE PROCESS,from that part of the world.

I know I am playing with these figures the fuel produced would be staggering

3,465,000,000 x 5 = 17,325,000,000,gallons.

I have not yet mentioned the fertiliser 20lbs/bushel

my calculator is beginning to sweat.

3,465,000,000 bushels x 20lbs = 69,300,000,000 lbs of fertiliser.

I can't begin to think about adding in the biomass I have left out.

With an output like this the deserts could be fertilised, power provided for desalination plants,to provide water. Could the deserts bloom, more agriculture,no food shortages? I think we are in at the start of a new age. It might seem high flown to some but just think what is possible.

For the the more earthy of us, we all have invested for profit and dollar signs must be starting to flash,I am happy to watch things developeand ignore the doomsday merchants, and enjoy the ride.

No wonder you were dumb struck Parson thanks for posting the info good fun ain't it.Folks we have a lot to smile about so keep at it, smiling that is. GL

Nice Find Parson

this is what I liked about that article

This is where USSE and SSTP let this company stay ahead of the other companies! With JR getting a larger amount of fuel from soybeans then anyone else ---if that is the case with all feedstocks then this is a HOMERUN!

Yes Gloworm, that's why I went slack-jawed. You went the math route--great work btw!--

I just imagined myself standing at the foot of the "Rocky Mountains" of Palm biomass leftover.

You're absolutely right! "No wonder that part of the world would be interested in Rivera's Process."

This is 4 eeker!

BP bullish for the alternative sector

BP is expecting to spend some $1.5 billion in Alternative Energy this year, said BP chief executive Tony Hayward yesterday (26th February) during the company's annual strategy presentation to financial analysts. The figure, he explained, is a front-end acceleration of BP's longer-term $8 billion plan to build a new business, based chiefly on solar, wind and biofuels and offering significant growth potential as world demand rose dramatically for low- or non-carbon energy.

"We intend to grow this business predominantly for its equity value," said Hayward. "Taking stock market valuations for similar companies, we estimate it is already worth between $5 billion and $7 billion. As we go forward we will be looking at how best we can realise that growing value for our shareholders."

Later in the presentation Vivienne Cox, chief executive of Alternative Energy, explained the breakdown of the groups valuation with the estimated value of BP's solar business being between $2.1 billion and $3.9 billion and its wind business between $1.8 and $2.1 billion. Including the gas-fired power generation segment of the business, this gave Alternative Energy a value of approximately $5-$7 billion.

Despite the seemingly large investment in the biofuels sector during the past year it wasn't flagged as a significant part of BP's Alternative Energy valuation.

Overall, Hayward confirmed likely capital spend for this year at between $21 billion and $22 billion, up from $19 billion in 2007. Some $15 billion was earmarked for upstream, $5 billion for downstream and $1.5 billion for the other businesses, including Alternative Energy. Divestments were estimated at $1 billion. He said the rise reflected a mix of sector inflation and growth. Gearing would remain at 20-30 per cent.

In conclusion, Tony Hayward said: "We have made significant progress at BP over the past ten months, quietly and without fuss, in resetting essential context, in establishing sound, practical objectives and beginning to deliver them.

"Our asset base is high-quality; our task - on which we are already vigorously in action - is to improve how it operates. We have a workforce which, as it is increasingly freed of unnecessary complexity and overhead cost and given clear aims and accountability, will translate the operational momentum we are already seeing in the first half of 2008 into steadily improving financial returns thereafter."
