AMBC News
Australian Investments in Malaysia Growing AUSTRALIA was one of the top three investors in Malaysia last year, and indications are that this year there will be a stronger injection of investments. Australian High Commissioner in Kuala Lumpur Penny Williams told the Business Times she expects this year's rankings to remain as good as 2006, with ANZ Bank's investment in AmBank totalling more than RM2 billion, which is by far the biggest investment from Australia this year. Big projects in the pipeline are expected to include Lynas, Grange, Rio Tinto and AXA Asia Pacific. Australia and Malaysia, she said, have had a strong, long-standing commercial relationship, but with a relatively low level of investments until last year. In 2006, the figure was RM961 million, from RM597 million in 2002. Rio Tinto is partnering Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd to build a RM7 billion aluminium smelting plant in Similajau, near Bintulu in Sarawak. Miner Grange Resources Ltd plans to start construction on Southeast Asia's first iron ore pellet manufacturing unit in Kemaman, Terengganu in 2010, with an initial capacity of 3.5 million tonnes, while Lynas Corp Ltd has proposed to build a RM200 million rare earth processing plant in Kemaman. Harvey Norman plans to open 20 more outlets within five years. It made its entry into the Malaysian market with its first RM10 million outlet in Petaling Jaya. ASX-listed Cell Aquaculture has invested in a 30 per cent stake in Terengganu Cell to produce 700 tonnes of barramundi fish a year, while BHP Billiton has set up an office in Kuala Lumpur to facilitate oil exploration activities with Petronas. Australian service providers in the financial sector, telecommunications and professional services are attracted to the more liberalised Asian services markets. Malaysia, Ms Williams said, now ranked as one of Australia's top service providers and had a market with huge potential. "Malaysia has similar legal and corporate governance systems, a solid body of Australian-educated alumni, a mini-cultural population, and a high level of English-spoken language competencies. Most importantly, it has a young, dynamic and growing consumer base for our service providers to tap into," Ms Williams is quoted as saying. She said the RM2.3 billion Australia invested in Malaysia during the first six months of this year included portfolio investment. Australia, which has the largest pool of investment funds in the Asia Pacific region, and with an investment funds asset pool that is the fourth largest in the world, is also looking to park private management funds in countries such as Malaysia. New economic growth corridors such as the Iskandar Development Region have aroused the interest of Australians, and Ms Williams said Khazanah Nasional Malaysia officials were expected to head to Australia next year to brief potential investors and service providers.
